APPI is hiring someone to join a 35-member team, embarking on an exciting journey that aspires to facilitate a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society through grant making. In the last 36 months, 70+ grants have been made in their areas of intervention (further broken down into specific themes) – Vulnerable Groups, Nutrition and Governance. The APPI represents a workplace that is well entrenched in diversity, inclusion and consists of individuals who are proficient at being specialised generalists, can double and triple hat with ease with BAU as well as specific projects with an aim to transform the APPI mission.

Operations

Overview

The Manager - Programmes manages end-to-end grant making in a specific portfolio under a theme aligned to an APPI grant making area. The incumbent ensures a seamless experience for potential partners and serves as a point of escalation. The incumbent is expected to develop and maintain a variety of relationships across the organisation and with partners, and needs to help in implementing the discourse and narrative of the APPI around measurable social change.

Responsibilities

Deliver grants in an assigned portfolio under an APPI theme

  • Responsible for end-to-end grant making including identification of partners, due diligence, grant approval, disbursement and management
  • Manage the disbursal of larger and high impact grants within the organization. These may happen sometimes in an individual capacity with the necessary guidance and supervision
  • Provide supervision and direction to the APPI research around specific themes, oversee response to enquiries from non-profit organizations regarding grant-making guidelines and request for proposals
  • Consult with non-profit organizations regarding specific grant proposals to ensure that the proposal meets APPI guidelines and requirements, and is a well drafted request, complete in all aspects
  • Work with other parts of the organization in order to agree and ensure delivery of grantee organizational development plans
  • Present a compelling case for grant approval to the senior management team on findings from field visits, partner reports, secondary research and other sources
Grant opportunity and disbursement
  • Ensure that all shortlisted organizations get the grant enquiry forms
  • Review all completed proposals to ensure that required information has been provided. Ensure that the story of the partner organization comes through clearly
  • As appropriate, conduct site visits and participate in interviews for each assigned proposal
  • Help the partner develop results frameworks and ensure that the thinking around the results framework is in keeping with the APPI operating plan
  • Conduct meaningful conversations with all grantees that validate their results framework/s for review and action by the Board
  • Post approval, work with the finance team and the grantees to ensure that the financial resources of the APPI reach them in time
  • Ensure compliance to the grant making system at the APPI through the entire life-cycle of a grant
Learning and Reflection
  • Report out on learning and reflection at the partner level and ensure that it ties in with the operating plan
  • Champion the accuracy and completeness of data for the portfolio
  • Made assertions on performance of the partner, identify discrepancies’ if any and suggest risk mitigation strategies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred
  • 7 to 10 years of work experience, either in a field operations role or work experience with a grantmaker
  • Should have made significant and long lasting contributions in his/her area of specialization
  • Grant-making experience strongly preferred; desire to work in and with nonprofit sector is essential
